Contractor didn't finish the job
December 20, 2024
You paid for kitchen renovations. Contractor disappeared halfway through. Now what?
Why contractors bail
They took on too many jobs. Materials cost more than expected. They're bad at business. Or they're just crooks. Either way, you're stuck with a half-finished project.
What your contract says
Read it. Most contracts have completion dates and payment schedules. If they didn't finish on time, they breached. If you paid upfront, they owe you work or refund.
Document everything
Photos of unfinished work. Copies of your contract and payment receipts. Text messages and emails showing broken promises. Get estimates from other contractors to finish the job.
Your options
Demand they finish or refund. Hire someone else and sue for the difference. File a complaint with licensing boards. Small claims court for amounts under $10,000. For amounts under $5,000, online dispute resolution is faster and cheaper.
Get a second opinion first
Upload your contract, payment records, and photos. Find out if you have a strong case. Get clear guidance on your next move. Then take action.
